According to a new report, the USA's Federal Trade Commission is “likely” to challenge Microsoft's proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Sources with insider knowledge of the FTC's operation have revealed that the investigation staff is “sceptical”.
Politico has revealed that the FTC is “likely” to use an antitrust lawsuit to prevent Microsoft from taking over Activision Blizzard. While the sources believe it is “likely”, this doesn't mean it's guaranteed and FTC commissioners are yet to meet with Microsoft and Activision lawyers about this issue. There's also been no formal complaint about the proposal yet from the FTC.
The big issue about the acquisition seems to be Call of Duty. While Microsoft continues to argue that it isn't possible for a single video game series to make or break a console, Sony has a very different opinion. Microsoft has also offered Sony a 10-year deal to keep CoD on PlayStation but Sony hasn't publicly commented on this.
