Psychonauts on Game Pass Tweeted by Double Fine

Psychonauts the original game has just dropped on Xbox Game Pass as revealed by Double Fine Studio’s twitter page.

First released in 2005 Psychonauts met critical acclaim but slow sales. Only around 100k units at release. Starting as an Xbox original exclusive it was then ported to the PlayStation 2 a couple of months later, and has since ported to PC, Mac and been successfully campaigned for backward compatibility on the Xbox 360.

Despite initial bad sales Psychonauts did win the Best Original Game at E3s Game Critic Awards in 2005.

Psychonauts is the brainchild of acclaimed industry designer Tim Schafer, with many well regarded siblings such as Grim Fandango, Brütal Legend, Broken Age, Full Throttle. Tim formed Double Fine after having worked at LucusArts being assistant designer on the legendary series The Secret of Monkey Island.

Oh the memories these cases bring back.

“Psychonauts follows Razputin, a young boy gifted with psychic abilities who runs away from the circus to try to sneak into a psychic summer camp. His goal is to become a Psychonaut, a secret government spy with psychic abilities. He finds that there is a sinister plot occurring at the camp that only he can stop. The game is centered on exploring the strange and imaginative minds of various characters that Raz encounters as a Psychonaut-in-training/"Psycadet" to help them overcome their fears or memories of their past, so as to gain their help and progress in the game.”

Since the Microsoft buyout of Double Fine they no longer need to worry about using Kickstarter to fund their games, which is great news for a studio who makes great but often niche games.

With Psychonauts 2 due to release soon, this original Game Pass drop is very likely a sign that 2 is just around the corner. Bringing the IP to a new generation of gamers and those who missed it on release so that there will be more hype for this ‘16 years in the making’ sequel.

Psychonauts 2 releases 'New Gen' on Xbox Series consoles but also Old Gen versions on PS4 and Xbox One. Featuring high level graphics and more importantly, Jack Black, who is voicing a Mote of Light who follows our protagonist on his adventures of the mind.

With Covid causing many game delays, we are not hugely optimistic for big game drops any time soon. But Psychonauts dropping at E3 would certainly go some way to sating appetites.
