A recent Reddit AMA from members of the Overwatch 2 development team revealed something that's torn the community a little. The team confirmed that the original Overwatch is being replaced by Overwatch 2 when it launches on October 4th this year.
When asked about the “Early Access” term for Overwatch 2, game director Aaron Keller stated that “it will be a replacement for the current live service”. This confirms the theory the original Overwatch might vanish once Overwatch 2 is released. Shortly after the sequel was announced, the official Twitter account for Overwatch stated that “Overwatch 1 players and Overwatch 2 players will play alongside on the same maps”.
It looks like Overwatch 2's changes will permanently overwrite the original game. This includes the move from 6v6 matches to 5v5. It will also no longer be possible to purchase the original Overwatch as a stand-alone game. Though it's still included in the Watchpoint Pack for Overwatch 2.
