Yesterday evening Xbox UK twitter account posted the following:
Errmm, Battlefield just DM’d us this…
With an image of a heavily redacted military-esk communication.
While not confirming much, there are some safe assumptions we can make about the upcoming Battlefield 6.
For one thing, it’s not a history shooter like the previous two games. Showing the source of the message as being Quantum Encrypted. Something that’s still in the realms of Sci-Fi for now.
We can assume this is based in the future. Though maybe close future. With ‘Quantum’ being thrown into any situation to make something sound futuristic, we can be fairly certain this is the vibe they’re going for.
The unit they mention is called the USS Ravenrock. Of the Navy Signal Corps. The USS of course suggests a ship. Weather this is sea based or space, is not clear. But one interesting thing about the name Ravenrock, it shares it’s name with a real US military underground instillation. See this from the Wiki:
The Raven Rock Mountain Complex (RRMC), also known as Site R, is a U.S. military installation with an underground nuclear bunker near Blue Ridge Summit, Pennsylvania, at Raven Rock Mountain that has been called an "underground Pentagon". The bunker has emergency operations centers for the United States Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps.
This might of course be a total coincidence, but with the detail that video games tend to put into games, it’s likely it was on purpose. This probably just indicates that it’s a ship involved in the naval intelligence, or housing high command at least.
Now the really interesting bit is when it comes to the date time given: XXXX | 01 | 04 3600 HRS
The year has been obscured as XXXX. But we can see the time. Showing Thirty Six Hundred Hours. Now, as most of my fellow earthlings know, we only have Twenty-Four hours in our day. So, this is either a countdown, though it says ‘Date of Transmission’, or, that this takes place on a planet with longer days.
Interestingly, there are only two planets in our solar system that have longer days than Earth, and those are measured in many many Earth days per cycle. So it would have to be outside our solar system if it is extra terrestrial.
In the message one of the obscured areas seems to say ‘Human’. Or ‘Most human of instincts’ if the following decrypted image is to be believed. While this is normal enough statement to make even on earth, with no known Aliens to be seen. Combining this with the previous evidence does make you think.
Now we do have what could be the complete text, from the following image. Source unknown. But does seem to match the areas we can see. And doesn’t give anything away that could be thought of as a spoiler. (Transcription below image)
To transcribe:
PROTOCOL: AB009117
SOURCE: QUANTM ENCRYPTED, LONG BAND RADIO BROADCAST
TARGET: "OZ." ALIAS UNKNOWN
INTERCEPTION UNIT: SS RAVENROCK - NAVAL SIGNAL CORPS
DATE OF RANSMISSION: XXXX | 01 | 04 3600 HRS
SOME OF YOU WANT TO RETURN HOME - THAT MOST HUMAN OF INSTINCTS.
WITH A HEAVY HEART, I MUST TELL YOU THE TRUTH. YOU HAVE NO HOME TO RETURN TO.
THE QUESTION WE MUST ASK OURSELVES NOW IS:
DO WE ACCEPT OUR FATE? OR DO WE DARE TO FIGHT FOR A BETTER WORLD?
NO ONE MAY FORCE YOU INTO BATTLE. BUT I SAY TO ALL WHO CAN HEAR MY VOICE.
IF YOU CAN FIRE A GUN, IF YOU CAN TEND A WOUND, IF YOU CAN CR HAVOC
THOSE WHO CANNOT NEED YOU, WE NEED YOU
WAR IS THE ONLY WAY HOME.
Does the ‘no home to return to’ mean Earth, or just home country, either way it sounds like the plot centres around being stuck behind enemy lines.
Setting this new Battlefield on an alien planet would certainly be a big left turn from previous entries in the franchise. But one that could set them apart from the usual rival of Call of Duty.
Battlefield 5 was not well received (I enjoyed it) with fans calling for a modern shooter. Will a future based Battlefield be too far from reality, or will it rejuvenate the franchise.
With Battlefield always having a focus on the vehicles, I’d personally be hyped at the idea of driving some alien tanks. Though with the new Halo out later this year, do we have the appetite for two space shooters?
Let us know what you think, would you like to see Battlefield jump into more risky territory?
